Phalaenopsis Orchid

I wanted to photograph some new flowers this coming Labor Day holiday weekend. So I went to my home improvement store and purchased this lovely Orchid. For this journal entry I experiment with form, texture, and lighting in color and black and white to capture the essense of the flower.

I learn a lot from street photography. Larry Fink, one of my favorite street photographers to study, photographs in a square format which I tremendously enjoy. The uniqueness of the 1×1 aspect ratio forces the flower to frame the photograph as opposed to the camera framing the subject matter if that makes sense. Elements I am able to practice are the use of negative space, contrast, and angle to the subject. The mathematically equal ratio also allows a buyer to not have to worry so much about space on their wall having to decide on a horizontal or vertical format. The print either fits or doesn’t. Easy purchase decision.
