One photography-inspired road trip years ago taught me that lesson the hard way\u2014my engine blew up, leaving me stranded in the middle of nowhere. But even the interstate can test you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Kansas is famously flat\u2026 until it isn\u2019t. My hybrid had been sipping fuel comfortably for most of the drive, but as the subtle hills rose northbound, the gauge dropped faster than expected. Apple Maps pointed to a single-pump station supposedly within range\u2014an unmanned outpost surrounded by endless cornfields that supposedly accepted cards. I was skeptical. My eyes stayed locked on the horizon, willing the station to appear. Relief washed over me when I finally pulled up: the pump worked, plastic was accepted, and fuel began trickling into the tank. I can imagine the collective sigh of relief it has witnessed over the decades. Where are those photos? Above all, I was grateful to be the photographer chronicling such a beautiful journey through the American heartland.
